Role of Mediators in Conflicts

Conflict ManagementIn terms of the wellbeing of the organization, one of the most significant roles of anyone who holds is that of a mediator of clash that may take place either between groups, between individuals, or between groups and individuals within the organization.

This leadership role is vital because without efficient intervention by a leader who wisely uses his or her formal or informal influence, many conflicts that perhaps at first stir up a healthy debate may be allowed to continue too long without resolution, resulting at best in needless delay of the completion of institutional goals or at worst in serious damage to the organization.

Many conflicts may be, at once, value-based, goal-based, and personality-based. Any or all of the heart causes may be at work in any arrangement. It has been determined that the necessary elements of the process include, very simply, (1) realistic assumption of an unbiased stand, (2) analysis of secluded and immediate causes of the conflict, (3) investigation of the possible effects of various achievable actions, and (4) determination of a resolution that is fair to the components as well as supportive of the mission.

An even trickier problem for the mediator is the gathering of related information and the analysis of that information to decide the cause or causes of the conflict. Since main consequence from contradictory values, goals, or personalities, it is vital for the mediator to come to realize which of the types of conflict are concerned in the immediate circumstances.

Value-based conflicts are perhaps the toughest to deal with because one’s morals are often not compromising. Goal-based, involving organizational or individual goals may be less hard to cope with.

And personality-based conflicts often can be momentarily resolved with transactional techniques, trade-offs that save face without compromising the reliability of anyone. The mediator recognizes that the condition is largely out of anyone’s direct control and represents a major barricade to the probable accomplishment of any planned solution.
