How to Manage Burnout Syndrome

Burnout syndrome in simple terms is malaise of the spirit.  The people that are most affected by this syndrome are, for example, service providers like police officers, nurses, counselors, team leaders, managers, etc.  These individuals may become hostile towards the very people whom they are dedicated to serve.  Some of the most common burnout syndrome-prone professions are journalism, traffic control, proofreading.  Their profession demands detailed work and require them to work under demanding time and pressure.
In layman’s term burnout is nothing but job depression and it can affect anytime, any person in any profession.  There is no immunity injection to protect anyone from this job burnout.  Thus, it can be described as a mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion caused by excessive workload and prolonged hours of working under stress.  This leads to lack of motivation and interest in your job and you are unable to meet the demands and thus it affects your quality of work and productivity.  You feel helpless, hopeless, aggressive, cranky, cynical, overloaded and bored.

It is very difficult to determine the exact cause of burnout syndrome.  It is similar to the chicken-and-egg type of a question, where you can get trapped either way and you must find out a solution to break the burnout cycle.  Burnout is quite noticeable when motivation wanes, so you must find out means to tend motivation and isolate, identify your problem, analyze and even seek external support to diminish burnouts.

Signs and symptoms of burnout:
The most common signs are feeling of helplessness, disillusionment, fatigue, lethargy, lack of interest, motivation, energy and enthusiasm.  The candidates who are afflicted with this syndrome find every problem overwhelming, and get detached.  This syndrome can affect your health, job, family, and even relationship.  But this can be treated and healed with little effort if one diagnoses this at primary stage of infection.

Following are simple solutions to manage burnout syndrome:

•    Assess your priorities.
•    Take out time for yourself.
•    Exercise regularly.
•    Passionately follow your hobby.
•    Do not hesitate to seek external help, counseling or guidance.

Remember, when work becomes drudgery and soulless and you do not enjoy your job then stop, meditate, think and act fast before it is too late.
