The first image that comes to mind when one talks of childhood is of carefree, happy and sometimes mischievous kid who lives in an idealistic and innocent world. It is true for most of the people as we all seem to have more or less the same childhood. Hence Berne calls such an ego of individual who has had a normal childhood as Natural Child.
By which he means all the things that one expect a child like spontaneity, impulsiveness, playfulness and love. One subset of Natural Child is Intuitive Child, a term applied to an ego of an imaginative, creative and thoughtful kid who is smart enough to use these facilities o his own advantage, for this reason this ego is nicknamed as little professor.
Such a Child is quite an expert in manipulating his opponents into compliance and is used to adapting himself to the environment, this adaptation is although very useful facility for life but it also clearly points to the sharpness of the child.
Similarly there is another kind of Child, called the Adapted Child or the frog, which is brought up in a difficult environment where he either learned to comply with his parent wishes and have no opinion or they turn out to be extremely rebellious.
Hence when deciphering the strokes of different people in order to figure out the approach to use with them one must first know the kind of Child they are and deal with them accordingly. The Child is often a times held responsible for troubles in one’s life as it not only makes one unreasonable but also because it is a very powerful, emotional and self-centered and resists the binding responsibilities that comes with growing up. Hence one needs to have an in-depth knowledge about Child ego structure in order to handle the Child, whenever one may encounter.
